Mitochondria are involved in a variety of cellular processes, which makes them essential for cell survival. In response to environmental stimuli mitochondria undergo dynamic changes in enzyme composition and inner organelle organization. The inner membrane of mitochondria is especially protein rich and displays a unique morphology characterized by large invaginations, the mitochondrial cristae. These membranes mainly contain the complexes of the OXPHOS system and metabolite carriers and represent a special microenvironment for mitochondrial respiration.
The group is interested in the organization of membrane protein complexes of the inner mitochondrial membrane and how it changes in a dynamic manner.
